SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT |
Mosques in Singapore play a critical role in the socio-religious development of the community. They are focused on their mission. Social development refers to building capacities of individuals, families and the community. This developmental agenda is in contrast to the more traditional one of intervention and remediation. While it is important for mosques to remain as places of worship and centres of Islamic learning, the context in Singapore requires that mosques play a larger role in the socio-religious development of the community. In the present context, mosques can add value to existing agencies by complementing them through effective outreach programmes and connecting people in need with social service providers. In other words, mosques will not assume the role of social service agencies like the Family Service Centres (FSCs), community self-help organisations and the Community Development Councils (CDCs). Rather, what this means is that mosques become part of the social service network playing the complimentary role of outreaching and connecting a more integrated part of the social fabric of Singapore. Mosques will focus on social development to help their jemaah cope with greater challenges of an open society. They need to be strengthened with a moral ballast to stay on top of challenges.
