KAMPUNG SIGLAP MOSQUE (OLD)
Masjid
Kampung Siglap dates back to a century years old. Acco rding
to records found behind the mimbar of the old Kampung Siglap
mosque, it dates back to a century. During those years, the
structure of the old mosque, has been repaired thrice. However, no
one really knows how old the mosque is as no proper documentation
has been kept. It
has been said that everyone in the village was involved in building
the mosque. Most of the villagers, being fishermen, sold their daily
catch and contributed the money to
raise funds for the building of the mosque. Time, effort and
money were dedicated towards this project. While men toiled at their
workplaces, women
and even young ladies were seen carrying sand from the beach
to the mosque’s
construction site.
Stone masons, architects, well-diggers as well as fishermen
contributed to the building of the old mosque. Upon completion, the
well which once used to supply the villagers with their daily water
needs, now supplies the congregators at the mosque as ablution.
It’s clear water never dries even during long drought seasons.
Tabuh,
Kentung and
Beduk (large mosque drums) were made by the villagers
themselves and were placed in the mosque so as to call people for
obligatory prayers or announcing special occasions like Hari Raya
Eid or Haj.
During that period, large pots , pans and cutlery were also
found at the mosque and were easily assessed by the villagers for
any occasions.
The
plot of land where the old mosque was built was bought by the late
Mdm Hajijah, mother to the late Mr Daud Bin M. Shah J.P. (alias Pok
Teh Daud).
The mosque could accommodate 500 congregators then. The old
mosque now takes on a new face eversince it was finally decided to
be
preserved by the authorities. It now becomes the cradle of
Tahfiz Al-Quran
Centre of Singapore.
